Occasionally your dentist may recommend the placement of a sedative dental dressing into a tooth, which has been causing pain. This temporary filling has an anti inflammatory effect on the tooth nerve and when left in place for a few weeks, may help to settle down a painful tooth prior to either a permanent filling or a root canal therapy.
